5 Signs Your Lawn May Need Help

We know many people will be spending time outdoors this weekend and spending the holiday with family.  While you are enjoying the outdoor fun, you might take a little time to observe your lawn.  There are several tell tale signs that your lawn may not be getting what it needs.  If you know how to see those signs early, potential problems can be fixed before your lawn has to suffer.

1) Weeds.

Of course, all lawns will have a few weeds. But if it seems like the weeds are taking over more and more then you may be developing a problem.  Your grass and the weeds are fighting for the same resources (water, sunlight, nutrients) as the weeds … the less competition be better.  Sometimes a weed control program is all you need.  Other times a pH test for the soil may be a good idea.  Weeds may thrive at a different pH from your grass, so adjusting the pH is another possible way to solve a weed invasion.  Your local lawn care specialist in the Bay area can help you determine exactly what needs to be done.

2) Pests & Insects.

Some insects can actually be good for your lawn. But if your lawn has developed brown sections, this actually may be due to insects that are not beneficial. Insects can also be indicated when you see parts of your lawn is shorter than others where insects are dining on your grass.  You may even see areas where the ground bulges up a little or sinks in when you step on it.  That may be a sign of moles.  Correcting issues with pests and insects depends on exactly what type of pests and insects you have, and that is why it is recommended to have a professional lawn care company in the Annapolis area help with diagnosing pest and insect invasions.

3) Thinning.

Sometimes people don’t notice they have a problem until they have bare patches in their laws.  If you can see the ground below the grass, your lawn is thinning.  Basically, if your lawn is not thick and lush all over, it may not be as healthy as you think.  Thinning and bare patches can be a sign of soil compaction.  Compacted soil prevents the roots of your grass from getting the moisture and nutrients it needs.  Aerating and overseeding your lawn at the right time can be the perfect solution.

4) Dryness.

If you walk across your lawn and you can still see your footprint after a minute or so, that may indicate your lawn is dehydrated.  You may also notice more of a blue-green color in your lawn if it is lacking water. But often, a dry lawn is also a compacted lawn.  If you have difficulty pushing a screwdriver down into your lawn and soil, your yard is too dry. Fixing the problem could be as simple as watering your lawn.  If you notice the water pools up and doesn’t soak into the lawn quickly, the compaction may need to be addressed with lawn aeration services from a reputable lawn service in the Bay area.

5) Discoloration.

If your lawn appears more yellow in color, it may be a sign that it just needs some fertilizer.  But if you notice patches of brown or yellow, or you can see where grass blades are shredded or shriveled, your lawn could be suffering from disease, pests, or dryness.  This is where you should have a professional lawn evaluation by Lawn Doctors of Annapolis to identify and treat the problem.
