3 Things to Think About for Your Lawn This Winter

While your lawn and trees do not need as much attention during the winter when growth is slower, the secret to a great lawn in the spring starts during the fall and winter.  In fact, at Lawn Doctors of Annapolis, we know from experience that many of the things you have to do to have a healthy lawn come spring starts during the winter when temperatures begin to drop.  Things like pruning and fertilization in the fall and winter can not only help your lawn survive the harsh winter conditions but will also set it up for healthy new growth when the growing season starts again.  We specialize in lawn care in Annapolis.  We know how to prepare lawns for the local weather and environmental conditions, and we love making great lawns happen.  If you are wanting a beautiful lawn next spring, read on to learn some of the valuable things you can do to care for your lawn this winter.

Tree Pruning

It may surprise you to know that the best time to prune your trees is in the winter, before budding. Proper pruning is a part of effective tree care and can help trees thrive.  For the most benefit, pruning should be gradual in order to protect the health of the tree.  Never remove more than one-quarter of the tree’s crown in a single season.  Avoid “topping” trees or cutting back main branches to stubs.  This is actually self-defeating because the limbs generally grow back higher than before and are ugly, bushy, and weak. Topping also weakens the health of a tree because it opens the tree to insects and disease and drastically reduces its ability to make food.  So, focus on the smaller branches, and don’t be afraid to thin them out – the tree will ultimately produce better quality blooms or fruit, rather than a multitude of weaker blooms.

Snow Fungus

As winter winds down and snow vanishes, snow mold could threaten your yard. This fungus arises in wet, cold weather. The best way to prevent snow mold is to make sure your lawn is properly fertilized and maintained during the cold weather. Winter lawn fertilization is an important part of keeping your yard healthy through the cold season. Treatments for snow mold involve the use of special fungicides and seeding strategies as well.

Rock Salt

Rock salt is a great way to make sidewalks and driveways safer to walk on when they are covered with snow and ice.  But salt is not a nutrient your lawn needs, and high concentrations of salt can be toxic to your lawn.  Once in your soil, the salt can take a very long time to wash out and it can do a lot of damage until then.  If possible, avoid using rock salt right next to your lawn.  Use less rock salt by shoveling snow and breaking up ice before applying it.  Try to divert any melt-off from reaching the lawn with landscaping.  Don’t forget, you can always call Lawn Doctor to help overcome the damage rock salt has done to your lawn if it is unavoidable.
