5 Tips on How to Grow a Greener Lawn

With a team of experienced technicians familiar with local weather and soil conditions, Lawn Doctor knows a thing or two about growing a greener lawn in the Annapolis area.  We thought we would share a few tips and tricks with you that may help you realize your dream of having that thick, green lawn you have always wanted.

1) pH Balancing.

If your soil does not have the right pH balance, all your other efforts to keep your lawn lush may suffer.  Most grass needs a pH level of 6-7.2 (cool season grasses prefer a little higher pH, warm season grass prefers a little lower pH). It is well worth it to do a pH test of your soil and add lime treatments if your soil pH is too high.  Start slowly so you don’t overdo it.  You can add more later if necessary.

2) Weed Control.

Weed control includes prevention and elimination of common weeds in your yard.  With a pre-emergent herbicide, you can keep weeds from growing.  Once they have sprouted, they must be quickly killed before they spread (especially crab grass).  Weed killers are absorbed into the plant through its leaves so the best time to apply weed killer for broadleaf weeds it is when the plant is growing during milder weather (rather then when it is cool or hot).  For crabgrass, it is best to apply between the second and third mow of the season for prevention.

3) Watering.

At Lawn Doctor, we recommend watering deeply, but less often.  When you water often for a shorter time the roots of your grass have no reason to reach deep.  If you water long enough to soak 4-6 inches deep, but water less often, your will grow a much more resilient lawn.  At first, you may need to use a spade to wedge out a piece of ground to see how deeply the water has penetrated.  Once you know how long to water to reach the desired depth, do that once a week (depending on rainfall and how heavy or sandy your soil may be). Heavy soil will need water less often and for less time than sandy soil which dries out more quickly.  It is also better to water in the mornings when it is cooler and the sun is less direct.  Watering in direct sunlight can scorch the grass in extreme heat.

4) Seeding & Aeration.

Late in the summer or early fall, you can boost your lawn thickness by seeding.  At Lawn Doctor, we know the importance of good seed to soil contact, so we combine seeding and aeration in one step with our patented Turf Tamer machine.  It will help de-thatch, open up the soil to air and seed, and distribute the optimum amount of seed throughout the soil. The best time to have that done is in the fall.

5) Fertilization.

Many people don’t realize that fertilizing your lawn in the fall can be even more important than doing so in the spring. So, at the end of the season, put your lawn to bed with a fresh application of fertilizer.  This will allow the soil and your grass to soak up nutrients all winter long and be ready for the spring growing season.
